Making AI billing safe for practices and patients

BillingBell Sentinel™ is proposed software in development at BillingBell Healthcare Systems. It is designed to verify AI-generated healthcare billing actions before submission.

The problem

Practices increasingly rely on AI to choose codes and build claims. When an AI tool misreads one type of clinical note, it can repeat the same error across hundreds of claims before anyone notices.

Practices absorb the denials, rework and audit risk. Patients receive balances that do not match the care they received, and some delay care because of confusing or incorrect bills. Small practices have the least staff time to catch these errors.

How Sentinel will work

  1. An AI tool drafts the claim

The practice keeps its current workflow. Sentinel receives the claim and the matching clinical note.

  2. Sentinel runs its checks

Codes are compared with the documentation, coding edits and the payer's rules.

  3. Clean claims go straight through

A claim that passes every check moves on with no added work.

  4. Problem claims are held with a reason

The coder sees what failed and why, corrects it, and Sentinel checks it again before it is sent.

What Sentinel is designed to check

  • Code matches the note

Does the documentation support the CPT®, HCPCS and ICD-10-CM codes the AI chose?

  • E/M level

Visit level against documented time or medical decision making, to catch upcoding and undercoding.

  • Coding edits

NCCI procedure pairs, modifier rules and medically unlikely units.

  • Payer rules

Coverage and medical-necessity rules for the patient's plan.

  • Duplicates and deadlines

Repeat charges, eligibility gaps and timely-filing windows.

  • Patient balance

Charges likely to produce a wrong bill for the patient.

Who it is designed to help

Patients

Bills that match the care received, fewer surprise balances, and fewer coverage problems that delay care.

Independent and small group practices

The speed of AI billing without a full compliance team, with fewer denials and less rework.

Coders and billing staff

A short list of claims that need attention, each with a clear reason, instead of rechecking everything.

Common questions

What is BillingBell Sentinel?

Sentinel is proposed software that BillingBell Healthcare Systems is developing. It is designed to check every claim an AI coding or billing tool produces before submission, compare the codes with the clinical note, apply coding edits and payer rules, and hold any claim that fails with a plain-language reason for the coder.

Is Sentinel available today?

Not yet. Sentinel is in development. We are inviting practices to take part as pilot sites and researchers to partner on its evaluation. BillingBell's medical billing services are available now.

Will Sentinel replace coders or AI billing tools?

No. Sentinel is designed to sit between an AI tool and the payer. Existing tools keep writing claims and coders keep the final decision; Sentinel tells them which claims need a second look and why.

How will Sentinel help patients?

Billing errors reach patients as wrong balances, surprise statements and coverage problems that can delay care. Catching those errors before a claim is submitted is designed to protect patients from bills that do not match the care they received.

How can a practice take part?

Independent and small group practices that use, or plan to use, AI in billing can apply to be pilot sites. Pilot sites help shape the software and receive a review of what Sentinel would have held on their own claims.
